All Termites Are Not Created Equal
Hilton Head and the Lowcountry are located in the most termiteinfested part of the United States. The subterranean termite has been the enemy of homes and businesses as long as these structures have existed in our area.
The “native” subterranean termite can enter the home undetected, coming in from underground and eating the wood in your home from the inside out. As a result, you are likely to not see evidence of termite damage until it is too late. This inside-out damage can take years to develop.
Enter another species of
subterranean termites: The Formosan Termite. Imported from the Far East, these have begun to appear in the islands and Lowcountry. Where a normal termite can take years to cause detectable damage, Formosan termites can only take a few months. They hold the distinction of being the most aggressive and destructive timber pests in the United States.
Termites can eat your home one bite at a time. We say bite back. We know how termites operate and how to detect and control them. We protect more homes and businesses against termite damage than anyone.

Formosan Termites develop huge carton nests which can contain millions of termites that aggressively seek and devour structural wood. They can also destroy living trees, such as oak, cypress, pine and maple trees. They have even been known to cause power outages due to eating through electrical cables.
Signs of Formosan termites include mud tunnels from the ground up outside walls that provide a highway that preserves life-giving moisture. In areas of high humidity (like ours) Formosans can establish secondary colonies in the very moist wood of upper stories if there is an adequate moisture source. Such sources might include faulty plumbing or roof leaks.
Like all subterranean termites, Formosans constantly search for new food sources. They can enter buildings through cracks in concrete flooring or travel under tiles in spaces less than 1/16 of an inch.
Do-it-yourself remedies are no match for regular termites, much less Formosan Termites. It takes trained eyes and special equipment to determine if termite activity is present, and there are effective ways to create a barrier between your home and these outside invaders.
